Summer 2009 Catch and Release Fishing Derby
Clayoquot Ventures is excited to host a summer long Catch and Release Fishing Derby for Chinook Salmon and Halibut! The main premise behind the derby is to provide an educational opportunity on the ecological value of releasing larger species while not inhibiting the awesome marine experience available in Tofino. For each Chinook Salmon over 30lbs and for each Halibut over 45lbs you choose to release (after the photo of course!) you have a chance to win a Grand Prize of a return trip to Tofino as well as random monthly prizes. If the fishing situation permits, your guide will assist with a photo opportunity prior to release.
Our guide team is excited to see Clayoquot Ventures host this event, and in fact, the idea stems from their studies and efforts. After supporting the release of many large fish over the years, the Catch and Release Derby is just another way to add to the excitement of the catch and the thrill of the release to support sustainable fishing and tourism for the future.
1. No registration fee to participate
2. Derby/Contest is open to all Clayoquot Ventures Ltd charter guests booked on charters with an end date on or before August 31 2009.
3. Each Chinook (Spring) salmon measuring over 30 pounds and/or each Halibut over 45 pounds that is successfully caught and released will be eligible for one(1) entry. (1 released fish = 1 entry)
4. If the fish is in a perilous situation (i.e. excessive bleeding, exhaustion etc.) it will be accepted as a catch and release entry as it was intended to be released by the contestant but it must be retained. As such, for Chinook Salmon, the contestant is required to mark his/her fishing license indicating a retained Chinook as per DFO regulations. Anglers must comply with all Fisheries and Oceans Canada regulations. The charter guide’s judgment will be the final decision on whether a fish shall be released or not.
5. The weight of an entered Chinook Salmon is determined by using the length and girth measurements and applying the following formula:
Girth of Fish (inches squared) x Length of Fish (inches) / 800 = WEIGHT.
The weight of an entered halibut is determined based on the Length/Weight Chart of the International Pacific Halibut Commission.
6. Anglers must comply with all Fisheries and Oceans Canada regulations. Regular daily and species possession limits apply. Upon reaching a daily or species possession limit, participants must refrain from fishing for that species for the balance of the day/trip. This includes participating in the Catch and Release Derby.
7. Charter Guides will record length and girth measurements of qualifying Chinook and Halibut. Upon successful measurement and release of the fish, the guide will assist the guest in completing a supplied entry form. The guide’s signature on the entry form will verify the guide’s authentication of the released catch.
8. All weight calculations are the final decision of Clayoquot Ventures Ltd.
9. Anglers must be in possession of valid Canadian saltwater fishing licenses, be in compliance with Fisheries and Oceans Canada laws and must abide by the catch and release code of conduct. Void where prohibited by law. Anglers under the age of majority may have a parent or guardian enter on their behalf.
10. Entries must be completed and received before 9pm PST August 31 2009. Incomplete entries will be disqualified. All entries shall become the property of Clayoquot Ventures Ltd. Clayoquot Ventures is not responsible for lost, misdirected or delayed entries. Entries may be submitted in person, by email, fax or mail.
11. Employees of Clayoquot Ventures Ltd and employees of derby sponsors and such employees' immediate family members and persons with whom such employees are domiciled are excluded from this contest.
12. Prizes will be selected by random draw. Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received. Prizes must be accepted as awarded and have no cash value. Clayoquot Ventures Ltd retains the rights, in its absolute and sole discretion, to make substitutions of equivalent kind or approximate value in the event of the unavailability of any prize or component of the prize for any reason whatsoever. There will be one grand prize and several monthly prizes. Monthly prize recipient entries will be placed back in the draw before the Grand Prize is drawn.
