Tofino B.C. mid September Fishing Update 2008
With beautiful weather and consistently good fishing in the Tofino area, the first two weeks of September provided a great start to the month.
Though the weather was less than ideal through the last part of August, Tofino’s saltwater fishing action and opportunities have continued
to provide anglers with “peak season” action for Chinook and Coho salmon, Ling Cod and Halibut.
The inshore waters of Tofino/Clayoquot Sound have provided calm conditions and great fishing for Coho Salmon, with most of these 10-18 lb.
acrobatic fighters biting on trolled spoons or Needlefish hoochies. The best areas have been near Tibbs Island as well as Monk Rock and Chetarpe
point approx. 20 minutes from Tofino.
The offshore waters have been plentiful with “feeder” Chinook Salmon in the 10-14 lb range, as well as many large Coho Salmon feeding along
the same offshore bank contours approx. 8 miles from the coast. Trolling has been the best method here as well, with very similar gear as
the inshore fishery. Fishing for Halibut and Lingcod has stayed consistently strong as well, with most of the action on jigs and power grubs
a little further out at the 10 mile contour.
Of special note, we have witnessed a very strong number of juvenile Chinook and Coho salmon along the outer coastline, which represents a
good sign for the returning stocks in three years.
The strong fishing action outlined above will likely continue for the next 2-3 weeks, often being dictated by late season weather conditions
that encourage Salmon runs to migrate south-ward, or inland to their natal streams.
