Canada Day Fishing and Festivities

July 2nd, 2006

The Canada Day long weekend provided great action for Chinook and Coho Salmon in the Tofino B.C. area, on Vancouver Island's beautiful west coast. The community of Tofino also enjoyed great weather for the Canada Day celebration in the village green park.

Undoubtedly for Lorrie and I, was the highlight of our 8 year old son Ben, singing our national anthem for the gathering of approx. 500 people. Ben belted out "Oh Canada" so strong, that many people didn't even sing along, as they were amazed with his ability and stature. He aspires to sing at a professional Hockey Game soon, and for those of you from the USA, you would be proud of how well he can crank out "The Star Spangled Banner" as well. If you are interested, you can see click the link below to our local online news site, that talks a little about the festivities.

We plan to have a video clip on our home page soon for our many friends and guests to hear Ben doing our community, and country proud.

Back to the fishing,...The recent plankton bloom that people have been hearing about along Canada's west coast has mixed things up a little bit, with varied water clarity and temperatures, but overall, is anticipated to be a positive scenario for the marine ecosystem along Vancouver Island's coastline.

Chinook Salmon and Halibut have still been the main focus, averaging 8 miles offshore from Tofino. The inner waters of Clayoquot Sound have been a great option during this past week as well, with some great action along the coastal island areas at Wilf, Blunden, Bartlett and Burgess. Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon in these areas have been most responsive to Anchovies, Small Herring and 4 inch Spoons trolled behind a Flasher in 30-65 ft of water.
The abundance of Baitfish in the Tofino area is excellent, with numerous Humpback Whales feeding along the outercoastline and offshore areas. When we see feeding Humpbacks during this time, we are confident that schools of Sardines (Pilchards) and Herring are present, slowing the migration of Chinook and Coho Salmon enroute to their natal streams down the coast. With the presence of this large bait, we often can rely on 5-7 inch Tomic plugs, and Spoons in the same sizes.

Halibut action has staying consistently very good, with a variety of sizes, with most action 8-12 miles offshore.

July fishing outlook for Tofino B.C. area

July 7th, 2006

Tofino B.C. Fishing Outlook Report July 2006

Once again, the month of July provides fantastic and diverse fishing opportunities in the Tofino/Clayoquot Sound area.

Whether you are venturing to the offshore waters for Chinook, Coho or Pink Salmon, or Halibut and Bottom fish might be your main focus, or applying your fly-fishing or light tackle skills for abundant Coho or Chinook Salmon and Rockfish, in and around the protected inshore waters of Clayoquot Sound. To experience a very unique remote freshwater excursion for Steelhead and Trout among the pristine mountain lakes or coastal watersheds might rank highest on your list, once again, Tofino-Clayoquot Sound is indisputably one of British Columbia’s most desirable and multi-optional angling destinations.

The 2006 season forecast for strong returns of Coho and WCVI hatchery Chinook Salmon is proving to be true, with many anglers experiencing action that would rival “banner” years from the past. After a great spring time fishery for Halibut, a short distance offshore from Tofino, July continues to provide great opportunity for these powerful and tasty bottom fish.

Fly casters love this time of the year as most everything in the saltwater box can potentially entice a violent strike from feeding Coho. Remember that a little bit of Krystal Flash or Glow Flashabou really livens up your fly patterns, often making a big difference.

Gear fishermen targeting Coho in the protected inshore waters of Clayoquot Sound, can rely on trolling small spoons like Gibbs Gypsy, Needlefish or Plankton Hoochies behind an Oki “lil Shooter” or Gibbs Flasher. Jig fishermen can expect success with a variety of small jigs like the Gibbs Minnow. Anglers targeting Chinook Salmon in these same near-shore areas should rely on Anchovies, medium Herring and Needlefish Hoochies. Rig your baits 6-8 ft. behind your favorite Flasher. Watch for baitfish on your sonar as well as surface activity and bird action.

Local freshwater fishing opportunities are excellent, with great options through late October. Please take a kid fishing as often as possible, to see the smile it brings to their faces, and to keep the interest and energy thriving in our world-class sport-fishery on Vancouver Island.

Tofino Fishing and Accommodation packages

July 14th, 2006

For a quick Tofino B.C. fishing update, the saltwater fishing for Chinook and Coho Salmon has been moderate over the last week, as we have experienced an abrupt low pressure system, with wind rain and a very large tide cycle. Our Guide team was wet but happy yesterday morning after a morning of big Chinook and Coho, both offshore from Tofino, as well as in the more protected inshore waters of the sound. Yesterday saw numerous Chinook Salmon in the high 20's to low 30's, and Coho up to the 12 lb. range. With fishing like this, and better weather in the forecast, our guides and guests are excited about what is yet to come.

We look forward to hearing from you with any questions or charter fishing date inquiries for the 2006 season, which will provide prime opportunities until late September, and still good options beyond that.
