Tofino / Ucluelet Fishing Report:
July 2005
Tofino near-shore Fishing Action
July 4th, 2005
The numbers of Chinook and Coho Salmon feeding in and along the Clayoquot Sound coastline has been fantastic.
On most days lately, the weather conditions have allowed for easy access for offshore fishing opportunities, but many of Jay's guides have
opted for the nearshore action. A short ride (average 15-20 minutes)to the fishing areas among the islands and inlets has provided more fishing
time for Chinook Salmon averaging 14-30 lbs. and Coho Salmon in the 5-9 lb. range.
Clayoquot Ventures Guide Marcus Deering has continued with his best efforts to bow up the drags on our Islander LX 3.8 Fly Reels by hooking
(and landing) large Chinook Salmon on almost every Saltwater Fly fishing Charter this week. This is a bizarre number of Chinook Salmon to
the Fly, but Clayoquot Ventures guests have not been complaining, as long as they get to warm up on a few big Coho Salmon first.
On July 3rd, Jay hosted guests Adam Goodman and Jason Heyman from Dreamworks Pictures in Los Angeles for a fantastic day of inshore Salmon
fishing in the Tofino area. "Beyond my wildest dreams" was a comment about the trip that Jay found very amusing, considering these
same folks created movies like "Bugs Life" and many others.
The action for Offshore Halibut and Bottom fish has been great as well, but it is hard not to highlight the almost unprecedented Chinook
Salmon numbers in Clayoquot Sound lately.
Fishing Tofino action great for Salmon and Halibut
July 10th, 2005
Despite last week's uncommonly poor weather conditions, the Fishing action in Tofino/Clayoquot Sound waters was not only reliable, but far
better than usual when we experience an intense low pressure system.
As mentioned in the previous Tofino Fishing report, the near shore action for Coho and Chinook Salmon continued to dominate the focus of
most anglers, whether they were Charter Fishing guests, or those that fished from their own vessels.
All areas of Tofino/ Clayoquot sound seemed to provide good fishing opportunities, as the amazing amount of baitfish in the area continues
to entice the Chinook and Coho Salmon to stay and feed for extended periods of time, instead of moving down the coast.
Offshore Halibut action was not focused on by many during the past week, but their were some very good catches of Halibut for those that
focused on this type of fishery.
A couple of noteable fishing highlights for the Clayoquot Ventures Guide Team; Saltwater Fly fishing Guide Marcus Deering continued his role
of nailing several more Chinook Salmon on the Fly this past week.
Of note, one Chinook that pushed the 30 lb. range was long fought and landed on a six weight rod. These days were of course complimented
by many Coho Salmon in the 5-10 lb range, along with numerous Sturgeon jumping and rolling near the boats on the Catface bar. Yesterday was
a non Chinook Salmon day for Marcus and his guest Will Tyler from England, but they lost count at over 20 Coho Salmon on the Fly.
Yesterdays P.M. Fishing Charter found Derek Fraser and his guests fishing at Bartlett Island for numerous large Chinook Salmon and many Coho
Salmon to fill the time. The last tack through B.S. Pass was a sweet and surprising ending with a 90 plus pound Halibut on the light Salmon
tackle. With the Halibut In the boat and on the way back to the Dock, the happy group from Vancouver told Derek that they didn't think that
Fishing could be so good, anywhere ?!?
It is in Tofino.
