The owners, staff, and contract charter guides of Clayoquot Ventures strive to offer you an exceptional experience while in Tofino. We are very proud to share just a few of the comments we have received from our guests in the past few years.

"Jason Mohl and his guides spare no effort to get their clients onto fish, and to make sure that they have a memorable experience. Whether pursuing colorful mountain-high Rainbows, shallow Coho near spectacular shorelines, or offshore Chinook amongst humpback whales, you will have one of the finest of all North American fishing experiences."

Tofino / Ucluelet Fishing Report:
Halibut and Chinook Salmon fishing on Vancouver Island's west coast

January 31st, 2006

Thanks for visiting our updates page for current Fishing Reports for the Tofino and Ucluelet areas on the west coast of Vancouver Island, B.C. This report focuses on Halibut and Chinook Salmon fishing near Tofino.
With only one more day until Halibut fishing opens in the Tofino and Ucluelet areas on Vancouver Island's West Coast of B.C., it looks as though the weather might not allow for any opening day opportunities.

Even though our early season Halibut fishing in the Tofino and Ucluelet areas often take place a short distance offshore from Tofino and Ucluelet, the winds, rain and ocean conditions on Vancouver Island's west coast have been quite relentless over the past month and a half.

When these aggressive storm fronts coincide with some of the season’s largest tides, it is less than appealing to focus your time, energy and questionable safety fishing for Halibut in the Tofino area offshore waters, or any others on Vancouver Island’s west coast.

The Tofino B.C. area does offer a good refuge for early season fishing in the semi protected inlet waters near Hot Springs Cove, B.C.

This area, known as Sydney inlet, is one of the main spawning areas for Herring in the Tofino-Clayoquot Sound area on the west coast of Vancouver Island. As the masses of Herring migrate inshore to the shallows in preparation of spawning, they are followed by aggressively feeding Chinook Salmon and opportunistic Halibut. The stronger than normal tide flows during this time, also promote the movement of Herring, and their predators, Chinook Salmon and Halibut. There have been recent reports of Chinook Salmon in the Sydney inlet area already pushing the 30 lb. range, These abnormally large early season sizes are most likely due to the abundance of Bait fish stocks such as Herring and Pilchards.

The long term forecast for Vancouver Island and particularly the Tofino and Ucluelet B.C. areas is not looking too bad, so I plan to have another posting on this fishing report page very soon, that provides you with an outline of a great day on the Tofino area waters, and some current photos of Chinook Salmon and Halibut.
Check back soon for current fishing reports for Tofino, Ucluelet and Vancouver Island B.C. covering Chinook Salmon, Halibut and Steelhead fishing.
