Tofino / Ucluelet Fishing Report: 2005
“Offshore Chinook Bonanza”
August 25th,2005
The delay in updating this report page is definitely not due to a lack of fish to talk about. We have been swamped with peak season fishing action, and
a high volume flow of happy guests that have experinced Tofino's great Fishing with Jay's Guides.
Even though the Chinook and Coho Salmon runs are at least 2 weeks behind normal run timing, the Tofino-Ucluelet and Clayoquot Sound area fisheries are
as strong as ever.
The Salmon fishing in the offshore waters from Tofino is as good as it gets, with multitudes of Chinook Salmon in the 20-40 lb. range. Many local anglers
are starting to switch over to fishing large Spoons and Plugs as it is much easier to release the 10-20 large Coho that are often experienced during a
morning outing. Hatchery marked Coho Salmon are quite numerous, with many reaching the 12-15 lb. class.
August is often the time that many Chinook and Coho Salmon cruise the outer coastline of Clayoquot Sound, creating a dynamic fishery for all gear types.
With a delayed run time, we are now experiencing some good fishing in these areas, and we anticipate these opportunities to peak over the next three to
four weeks. Tofino's inshore Saltwater Fly fishery is experiencing a slower trend right now, probably due to the late run timing as well as an increase
in water temperatures from the norm.
We are excited about the great Tofino area fishing opportunities that September will bring, juxtaposed with the often calm weather patterns that help create
a world class fishing scenario in the protected waters of Tofino/Clayoquot Sound. All gear types, especially the Saltwater Fly anglers are anticipating
the next 4- 5 weeks to be outstanding.
Halibut fishing in the Tofino area waters has stayed very strong through August, with most anglers focusing on artificial baits to avoid Dogfish. (Mud
Sharks) Opportunities for Ling Cod and Rockfish are always present, with the coming month of September usually providing some of the season's best fishing.
Freshwater fishing in the Tofino area will continue to provide great opportunities until late October or early November, with local river systems fishing
very well until December.
