August 2009 Recap for Tofino BC Fishing

What a phenomenal month of Fishing! The lack of updated reports is sure not due to a lack of Salmon action to write about, in fact it has been the total opposite, with our guide fleet going full speed and the Fishing fantastic! The Tofino B.C. area, and most specifically the Clayoquot Ventures Guide Fleet enjoyed what was likely the best Chinook and Coho Salmon fishing in the last 10 years. A prime example of the quality fishing would be that we handed out over 5 Dozen Tyee hats to guests who either caught or released a Chinook Salmon over 30 lbs. Only one Tyee was necessary to qualify a fishing guest for the “Tofino Tyee Club” so on the many days that the same person caught more than one Tyee, they still only received one hat for recognition of their big catch. One happy guest landed 5 Chinook over 30lbs, so was more than happy to enter into our Catch and Release derby created to support sustainable fisheries.
Most of August found the Guide Fleet fishing large Spoons and Plugs approx. 6-8 miles offshore from Tofino, and they found that fishing with common baits like Anchovies or Herring attracted too many Coho. Yes, Too Many Coho Salmon was fun but challenging when trying to keep the gear in the water for Chinook Salmon. To date, Clayoquot Ventures guide Matt Thornton found the largest Chinook for Tofino area waters at 51 lbs, with a well deserving regular guest earlier in August.

With Coho Salmon numbers so strong, the Tofino area inshore fishery has been on fire! The action since late June has been great, but with the numbers of fish still so strong, and the average size up in the 9-14 lb. range we really couldn’t ask for it to be much better. Tofino area’s once famous Saltwater Coho Salmon Fly fishery is back on the map in a big way! Yesterday saw the largest to date at 21 screaming and jumping pounds!!!!!
With the 2010 Salmon forecast very similar to 2009, we are already looking forward to what next year will bring, even though September will provide a solid month of action for us yet. The peak season continues for a while yet, and availability is fairly good on many dates through to early October, so we’d be glad to hear from you and help you with a great fishing experience yet this late summer/fall season.
