"This year will mark our 6th return to the Tofino area, and especially to Jay’s remote Steelhead Camp.

We feel like locals while in Tofino at the Coffee Shop and Tuff City Sushi Bar, but there is no one to recognize us where Jay takes us to experience great Trout and Steelhead Fishing, and total relaxation.

Our biggest problem is trying not to tell too many fishing buddies at home cause we might get bumped out of our prime dates."

Tofino Fishing Report: 2005

For the Weeks of: May15th - May 30th, 2005

Saltwater Report: The Tofino area had some fantastic fishing over the past 10 days, with the last 3-4 days providing some really intense action. Tofino's main offshore fishing area known as Portland Point, has been a strong standby for Chinook Salmon in the 14-30 lb. class, and many Halibut averaging 20-50 lb. Both of these species have been consistently caught by trolling near the bottom with a variety of spoons, hoochies or bait. The Halibut fishing around Portland Point and off of Lennard Island is now beginning to peak, as you will see in the highlights below.

Saltwater Fly Fishing Report: This past week has been the best Saltwater Fly fishing we have experienced yet this season. The Catface area has provided the best opportunities for "Blueback" Coho in the 2-5 lb. range, with the size and numbers of these fish expected to increase dramatically over the next few months. June 1st marks the opening of a retention option for Coho Salmon, so please check local fisheries postings for updated regulations. Local river estuaries are still productive for Sea-Run Cutthroat Trout for at least 4 weeks yet. We are currently offering discounted half day Charters for these great fly fishing trips.

Freshwater Report: Steelhead fishing has slowed over the last couple weeks, with a time transition right now between late spring run Steelhead and some small runs of Summer Steelhead that often start to show up by late June. Kennedy Lake has become a reliable option for trout anglers casting from shore with flies or spinners. The remote lakes of Clayoquot Sound are now very productive, with the trout actively feeding on many different aquatic insects, promoting great fly fishing opportunities. See our web site for some recent photos of beautiful local trout prior to their release.

Highlights of the Week: Clayoquot Ventures' guide Marcus Deering hosted a group from Ikea Canada for a morning of Saltwater Fly fishing. The 3 ladies onboard had a great time releasing approx. 15 Coho Salmon on 5 wt. fly rods. May 29th was Halibut Day for Clayoquot Ventures' guides Derek Fraser and Blake Klopfenstein. Derek and Blake each guided a half day saltwater charter, hooking over 20 halibut between the 2 vessels. See some of the "fresh" photos at www.tofinofishing.com
