Vancouver Island Fishing Report: 2005

For the Weeks of: April 9th – 23rd 2005

Saltwater Report: Sorry for the delayed report, but after weathering almost two weeks of February like weather conditions, we are now back on the water enjoying great April fishing. Chinook Salmon fishing in the inlets did provide some great action in between gales, with some fish in the 20-25 lb. range. The Offshore waters are now calm enough for our recent offshore trips that have produced many nice12-20 lb. Chinook salmon. Halibut fishing has still been good, with the favorable tides in the coming week, will provide great opportunities. Local Halibut average 20-60 lbs, and our Halibut fishery peaks in April, May, June and July.

Saltwater Fly Fishing Report: Numerous Sea-Run Cutthroat Trout have provided some great action in the shallow bays and estuaries of Clayoquot Sound. The downstream migration of Salmon fry into local river estuaries has helped increase feeding activity for these feisty sea-run Trout. Coho Salmon have also been located near these same areas, but the Cutthroat Trout have been more responsive to our offerings. These Juvenile Coho do not remain finicky for very long. We are currently offering discounted half day Charters for these great fly fishing trips.

Freshwater Report: The recent foul weather has been quite beneficial for Steelhead and Trout fishing in local rivers. Spring rains and snow melt are always a positive factor for these species, and we have been experiencing some fantastic fishing this past week. Using mainly large fly patterns, Steelhead up to 14 lbs have all been carefully released, as well as many great Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout to add to the fun. Upcoming lake trips will be reported soon.

Highlights of the Week: Jay’s guest, 74 year old Manuel Castro from San Francisco CA. released his first fly caught Steelhead, as well as landing and releasing 7 beautiful 14-21 inch Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout in 7 consecutive casts. What a phenomenal day for this happy repeat guest. Numerous other Steelhead and Trout were also released by Manuel’s son, Jack Castro.
