Vancouver Island Fishing Report 2002
For the bountiful and pristine waters of Tofino-Clayoquot Sound, fishing has always been a major attraction, so with the great opportunities
of the coming season, west coast anglers are reeling with anticipation.
Chinook Salmon opportunities will start the season as usual with the protected near shore waters offering fish in the 6-15 lb. Range.
As the spring progresses, look for aggressively feeding Chinook in the offshore banks 4-8 miles from Tofino. Averaging 12-20 lbs, these
feisty Salmon prefer Anchovies, Spoons and hoochies trolled deep and slow. Remember that glow green is an essential color of the early season
arsenal. As the larger, maturing Chinook return to local waters by early July, look for these brutes in shallower water right through mid.
September.
This years Chinook salmon forecast is very favorable with strong returns anticipated along with potential of the conservation corridor of
the past two seasons being lifted.
Rely on strong numbers of Coho Salmon again this year with fishing opportunities being as good and potentially better than the past few seasons.
Anglers should strongly consider the late season options for dynamic action on big Coho, protected water and no crowds.
Halibut and Bottom fish opportunities are consistently strong in the offshore waters from Tofino. Starting in early April, and peaking through
June and July, with good action lasting through late October. Always consider the weather, tides and safety equipment on your vessel before
plying the offshore waters for either Salmon or Bottom fish.
With declining numbers of Steelhead in numerous British Columbia watersheds, Vancouver Island’s west coast has faired well with many
rivers and streams holding stable runs with some showing increase and promise for future years.
Most mountain lakes, as well as the streams that drain into Clayoquot Sound has limited access, so in turn, they see very few anglers. Great
fishing opportunities exist for those who make the effort.
The overall outlook for the 2002 season looks fantastic, so for visitors planning a trip this season, book your fishing and accommodations
well in advance. Chinook Salmon anglers should plan on loading a few leader boards with cut-plug set-ups for August and Saltwater fly fishermen,
start tying your trusted patterns because this seasons Coho are going to shred them up.
Come and see for yourself what many others have already experienced, just why Tofino continues to prosper with sport fishing and tourism.
