Dear Jay
I know it's already been said but thanks one more time for such a great trip.

This year was really a special one and I'm already planning the next one!

Thanks again for a great time fishing.

It's fun going out with somebody who really enjoys what he's doing.

Vancouver Island, BC Fishing

With the dynamic 2000 fishing season barely behind us, and the optimistic outlook for the upcoming year, it's no wonder that anglers on Vancouver Island's Pacific Rim are buzzing with enthusiasm.

For the pristine waters of the Tofino-Clayoquot Sound area, we anticipate very similar opportunities and run timing as last year, with increased chances for Coho Salmon later in the season. New and returning anglers to the area should strongly consider the trend of the past couple seasons; Chinook Salmon fishing has been strong by late April, with May and June providing phenomenal action.

The mixed sizes and numbers of these early fish will easily rival the action of the later season fishery. Expect this same time frame to produce your best Halibut opportunities of the season, often finding these powerful bottom dwellers in the same baitfish rich areas as the Salmon.

Coho Salmon fishing has been absolutely fantastic starting mid-July, with non-stop action thru late October. Expect more liberal regulations for Coho this year, especially for the larger local fish later in the season. Saltwater fly-fishermen should also consider this to be the premium area and timing to catch these, and other exciting fish on a cast fly.

Tofino-Clayoquot Sound's freshwater options are available, but generally restricted to the remote mountain lakes and coastal streams accessed by boat or float plane. A unique guided trophy class Rainbow trout fishery is available only to those who are interested in releasing big, healthy fish in pristine waters. There are small, but stable runs of spring Steelhead and numerous Sea-Run Cutthroat can be found throughout the season.

Current fishing conditions are limited on the saltwater, primarily to the inshore areas of the Sound. Chinook Salmon in the 6-12 lb. range can be found with regularity, with some larger fish available in the offshore waters, weather permitting. Anchovies, Small Herring and a variety of spoons will produce when fished deep.

Some local river systems are holding winter-run Steelhead that will take a variety of light drift gear, small spoons and spinners along with a well-presented wet fly. Main patterns for success are; lead-eye egg leech, single eggs and black or purple General Practitioners.
