2005 -“Another Great Year Ahead”
for Vancouver Island fishing on the west coast of Canada
The 2004 fishing season was fantastic in the Tofino B.C. Canada region, with record catches of Chinook salmon, very consistent Halibut action and Coho Salmon hitting our flies and light tackle at a rate that other coastal B.C. guides can only dream of. Amazingly, the 2005 fishing forecast indicates even better returns of Chinook and Coho Salmon to the Canadian west coast.
The winter returns of native Steelhead to most Vancouver Island systems was fair at best, fortunately our small spring run rivers produced quite well for Steelhead and excellent for Rainbows and Cutthroat Trout. We also released an unprecedented number of large Rainbow Trout at our fly-in lakes. This fishery has only been getting better over the years, with a very healthy population of these unique Rainbow Trout.
The 2005 season will again be a high cycle year for literally millions of Pink Salmon that pass by the Tofino coastline. These smaller salmon species can be somewhat of a nuisance when targeting the mighty Chinook or Coho, but many anglers have utilized this opportunity to enjoy non-stop action on extremely light tackle. What a great scenario to introduce kids to saltwater fishing fun!
Jay was busy this past spring, outfitting the newest addition to the Clayoquot Ventures fleet. The “Power Play”, a 22ft Wellcraft centre console has become our most versatile vessel, as well as a guide favourite. Powered with a 255 HP Optimax and a 9.9 trolling motor, this solid vessel is perfectly suited to fish the offshore waters for Chinook and Halibut as well as the inshore waters for Coho with light tackle or flies. The increase in requests for people to experience these diverse fisheries within the same day, has led to the “Power Play” finding a niche in our local fisheries.
In July, Jay had the pleasure of hosting T.V. Fishing personalities Shelly Todd and Courtney Hatfield. The weather and conditions were prime to experience and capture on film, three of Tofino’s finest fishing opportunities. Highlights of the week included Jay releasing a beautiful Rainbow trout over 10 lbs, at his favourite fly-in lake. Jay and the gals also released over 15 prime Coho while filming the Saltwater Fly fishing segment. Shelley, Courtney and producer Owen Bird indicated that fishing with Jay and staying at the Middle Beach Lodge was a definite highlight from their years of fishing and travel around the world. The three shows have been repeatedly aired across North America since September 2004, with fantastic response from many viewers.
Although great fishing opportunities are plentiful from early May to mid October, the months of July and August tend to be the busiest for Tofino, which can make accommodations difficult to find during these two months. We encourage you to book your fishing excursions with Clayoquot Ventures as soon as possible, and to strongly consider our shoulder season rate specials, with several packages using our private guest suites.
Our team of professional local guides look forward to showing you more great fishing in the Tofino/Clayoquot Sound area. For further details, or to book your 2005 charter please call 1-888-543-7422 or find us on-line at www.tofinofishing.com
