"We’ve been wondering about all the hype on Tofino. Now we can say for ourselves that the fishing rivals that of Alaska, the restaurants are World Class, and we drove right there within a day from Portland.

Thanks for helping us with this great experience."

Salmon Fishing Report: August 2000

Up to this stage of the season, fishing in the Tofino B.C. Clayoquot Sound area has been nothing short of fantastic. Inshore and offshore waters, Chinook and Coho Salmon arrived in numbers that should impress any fisheries biologist. Local offshore waters saw more Halibut, in greater sizes than usual with many chicken halibut, showing very promising future stocks.

The local saltwater fly fishery showed positive progression with more enthusiastic anglers and even more willing and aggressive Coho Salmon coming to the cast fly or Buck-tail.

For Chinook salmon, we do have some notable new restrictions this August, the emphasis is on the fact that we still have great fishing opportunities for all species.

Starting on August 1st, Chinook Salmon retention is still two per person per day, allowing anglers one Chinook over 77cm. and one Chinook Salmon under 77cm.Retention for Chinook Salmon is limited to the offshore waters 1 mile outside the surf-line. Expect very good fishing in the offshore areas from Portland and Raphael points, trolling anchovies, 4-5 inch spoons, Cuttlefish hoochies and medium Herring.

Coho Salmon retention is for two hatchery fin clipped Coho per person, only on inside waters. Increase your chances for success in areas like Kutcous pt. and Bartlett Island using small spoons, needlefish hoochies as well as flies and buck-tails.
